Although hardcopy newspapers are being viewed by some as something that will be in history books (virtual copies of course) shortly after records and VCRs, I don't think all is lost. 

Newspaper as a genre, a style of writing, a source upon which the public relies, is not going anywhere. Paper will probably be gone fairly soon in historical terms; I foresee this happening after the oldest generations die off.

I can also picture myself explaining to my grandchildren why what they are reading online is called a "newspaper" because back when I was a kid the news was printed on something called paper, a pulp based substance that killed acres upon acres of trees.

But maybe all of the trees we will save from virtual newspaper will help the pesky climate change problem, another thing that I will have to explain to my grandchildren that was from back in my day.
